Daniel Carlson

VP, Strategy & Development, Montana Renewables

Daniel Carlson joined Montana Renewables, LLC as the Vice President, Strategy & Development for Montana Renewables, LLC, a division of Calumet, Inc. in 2022. In this role he was part of design and start-up of the first feed pretreatment unit designed with ARA’s HCU technology, and is presently leading the front end engineering for the maxSAF project which will double throughput and increase SPK selectivity at the Great Falls facility.

Mr. Carlson has over 4 decades of experience in design, operation and optimization of petroleum refineries and transportation fuels production. Prior roles have included Vice President Optimization for Andeavor where he was responsible for planning and optimization for 10 refineries and over 1.1 million barrels per day throughput, Vice President Operations and Technical at Tesoro’s 380 KBPD Los Angeles Refinery, and Vice President of Tesoro’s Los Angeles and Hawaii Refineries. Prior roles included operations manager, project manager and process engineering manager, and numerous operations and technical roles.

During his career he has led Front End Engineering on multiple projects valued over $1 Billion and created hundreds of millions of dollars a year in optimization, yield improvement and value creation. In multiple refineries he has led improvement in personal and process safety and environmental stewardship, implementing remote coke drum deheading, adding contractor safety councils to lead record safety performance, flareless unit start-ups and shutdowns and increasing transparency and credibility with Community Advisory Panels. He also led implementation of planning and execution
processes resulting in completing the largest-ever turnarounds on-time and on-budget at multiple locations.

Mr. Carlson has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from Saint Mary’s University. He is a registered professional engineer in California.
